The SPA, Where and Why

Northern Lazio, also referred to as Tuscia offers several large and small sulfur springs and is therefore considered among the most abundant in Italy. Their use in therapies such as baths (e.g. hydrotherapy) has been known for centuries and considered valid remedy to defend the body by inflammatory stimuli or external endogenous inflammation, for the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases of the respiratory system around and osteoarticular, for diseases of the skin, of the genital tract and metabolic diseases. In addition to the famous resort of Terme dei Papi (only 60 meters from our B & B), Viterbo also offers spa centers open to the public: the Park Bullicame, Bagnaccio and the Pools Carletti. The source of the sulfur spring (a little less than 500 meters from our B & B) is considered the most famous for its therapeutic qualities. At the center of the homonymous park there is a natural crater shaped tub that houses the precious waters. From here, the source branches in other three tanks, which are for those bathing at lower temperatures. Even Dante, in his Divine Comedy, cites the spring of Bullicame in verses which are reported on a stele in the park.
From the Etruscans to the Romans, that each people has established itself in the area of Tuscia has taken advantage of the benefits that these waters offer. In fact, even the popes in the Middle Ages were regularly in Viterbo to heal and regenerate, until Pope Nicholas V gave orders to erect a building specifically for him, which was called the Pope’s bathroom, which then name the “Terme dei Papi”.
